Summer 2014 Designer Handbag Trends

The Cannes International Film Festival took place in the South of France just a few weeks ago, and if the celebrity handbag choices that were spotted on the red carpet and out and about town were anything to go by, there are some definite handbag trends forming as we march headlong into the warmer months of summer. Here is a quick look at two Cannes-inspired emerging summer trends. Size Matters After season upon season of massive, oversized “it” handbags, it looks like things are finally starting to get smaller, and not just on the red carpet, where delicate clutches are always in vogue. Out and about in Cannes, celebrities like Sophia Coppola and Cara Delevingne were spotted with downsized versions of handbags by Louis Vuitton (for Coppola) and Mulberry (Delevingne). Likewise on the red carpet, the trend for envelope clutches seems to have given way to the smaller, more feminine, jewellery-like appeal of miniaudiere and box clutches, which were seen in the hands of Rosario Dawson (who carried Jimmy Choo's breathtaking Cloud Clutch) and Riley Keough (carrying the Louis Vuitton Petite -Malle Bag). The Importance of Good Ventilation Perforated leather seems to be having a bit of a moment right now. Dolce and Gabbana outfitted several of the supermodels in attendance at Cannes with their Miss Sicily bag, which features a lace laser-cut design in the leather of the front flap. This is a trend that can be found repeated in both high-end and main street retailers at present, giving the rest of us mere mortals a shot at this fresh and feminine summer trend.
