Care and Maintenace - Suede Handbags

If you're like many handbag lovers out there, you tend to avoid suede handbags like the plague. As beautiful as it is, suede is notoriously easy to get dirty, and as a result, many people who love it tend to eschew it for materials that are considered to be a little less high-maintenance. Here are a few tips that will not only help you keep your suede looking good, they may also push you to finally buy that bag you love but have been worried you might ruin. Use a suede protector Sure, it seems like a forgone conclusion, but these products really do work in making it difficult for dirt and grime to get a foothold. If it gets wet If you get caught in a deluge with your favorite suede handbag over your arm, don't panic. When you get home, blot as much of the water off of the bag as you can with a fluffy towel, reshape the bag (you may want to place some plain white paper inside the bag if it needs support for this), and let it air dry naturally. Do not use your blow-dryer or place the bag on top of a radiator. This will warp the leather! Always follow any cleaning with the gentle use of a suede brush. If it gets stained If it is a dry stain (like color transfer from clothes), try gently using a clean pencil eraser to buff the stain out. Wet, or more stubborn stains may benefit from some white vinegar and gentle rubbing with a damp towel. Although it is actually fairly easy to remove small stains, anything that is diffuse or very oily is best handled by a dry-cleaner - some chemicals are best left to the professionals!
